The Central Faculty of Algiers, now called University of Algiers 1 Benyoucef Benkhedda, is one of the capital’s most important university landmarks. It is located in the heart of Algiers-Centre, near Didouche-Mourad Street, Maurice-Audin Square, and the Faculties Tunnel.

Designed from 1888, it is one of Algeria’s first major higher-education institutions. Its historic building reflects the development of higher education and the urban evolution of Algiers.

History

The Central Faculty played an important role in educating many generations of students. It hosted several disciplines, including literature, sciences, law, and medicine.

After Algeria’s independence, the institution continued its mission of developing national higher education. Today, it bears the name of Benyoucef Benkhedda, former president of the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic.

Architecture

The building is distinguished by its monumental and elegant architecture, characteristic of the major public buildings constructed in Algiers at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries.
